Considered one of the wealthiest men in Mississippi, Richard Scruggs gained notoriety for suing the asbestos industry on behalf of sick shipyard workers. He also represented devastated homeowners against insurance companies following Hurricane Katrina. In his most lucrative case, however, he represented the State of Mississippi against tobacco companies. The lawsuit resulted in a settlement of US$206 billion. Scruggs received US$300 million of that sum in legal fees. In the 2000s, this legal eagle pleaded guilty to corruption and was sentenced to five years in prison. Once released, the fallen lawyer founded a charity to promote adult education.
