Although different habits apply to different people, there are a few habits that can benefit pretty much everyone:
1. The most critical habit to develop is one of mindfulness and self-awareness. When you act, speak, or think, reflect on why you did so. What purpose did it serve? Did it get you closer to your goals? Was it positive, or negative? What can you do differently in the future for a better outcome? Understanding yourself is crucial to self-improvement.
2. If you’re not ready for drastic changes, follow the 1% rule. Each day, strive to be just 1% better than you were the day before. It may seem like you’re taking baby steps, but the effect compounds over time with amazing results!
3. Develop an evening routine that leads to restful sleep, and a morning routine that sets your day up for success. Good sleep is crucial for your mood, energy, and productivity. Plan out a morning routine the night before that involves self-care and/or productivity.
4. Make a habit of practicing self-care and self-love. If you typically have negative thoughts about yourself, feel like you’re not good enough, etc., work on changing your self-talk. Give yourself the same grace and forgiveness you would offer a loved one. Focus on your mental and physical health. Build healthy boundaries with others that may be having a negative impact on you. Be gentle with yourself if you stumble or fail - it’s all part of the process!
5. Build a habit of practicing gratitude. Express your gratitude to others and look for gratitude in places you normally wouldn’t think of looking at. When you’re feeling down or stressed out, stop for a moment and think of the things you’re most grateful for. You’ll be pleasantly surprised by the incredible impact gratitude can have on your mood, attitude, and even your relationships with others!
6. Make a habit of staying active and eating foods that nourish your body. Your physical health is important, even for your mental health. Stay hydrated and try to limit fast food, take-out, and sugary snacks with empty calories.
7. Manage your time. Having a schedule often deters people because it sounds boring and stifling, but it doesn’t have to be that way. You can still have spontaneity and time for fun, but it’s important to have a plan and structure. Routines and schedules improve productivity and reduce stress. Keep a planner or to-do list, and put it somewhere very visible. Resolve to stick to it to the best of your ability, but don’t over-schedule yourself.
8. Make a habit of continuously seeking knowledge and improvement. Don’t let yourself get stagnant or lose sight of your goals. Set aside time to learn, hone skills, or engage in hobbies and passions.
9. Make it a habit to spend your money consciously and develop a healthy relationship with your finances. Try budgeting and tracking your spending. Work on paying off your debts (if applicable), and save what can you. Spend it on what you want, not what you think will impress someone else. There’s no need to keep up with the Joneses. Instead, make it a habit to only spend money on things that you truly value, and seek more experiences than things.
