Yesenia Ivonne, 35, is accused of shooting dead seven family members as they slept at a property in the neighbourhood of Primero de Mayo located in the city of Boca del Rio in the Mexican state of Veracruz on 3 July this year.
After the alleged massacre, the suspect is believed to have hidden in the house with her five-year-old son and 13-year-old niece.
She feigned “extreme fear”, according to Secretariat of Security and Civilian Protection spokesperson Ricardo Mejia Berdeja.
The seven victims have been identified as the suspect’s parents Jose Luis Castillo Hernandez, 63, and Maria Concepcion Candela Barbosa, 62, her siblings Oscar, 45, and Yuridia Edith Castillo Candela, 44, her in-laws Maria de la Luz Estrada Olguin, 42, and Oscar Valentin Castillo Estrada, 38, and her 15-year-old nephew Mario Alberto G.G.
The authorities suspect that Ivonne became embroiled in a heated row with family members over inheritance on the day of the alleged slaying.
Her father ran a chain of successful butcher shops called Carnes Selectas in Veracruz State.
She told police officers on the scene that she was hiding with the two youngsters to save their lives and was initially allowed to go free.
Ivonne was arrested in connection with the shooting a month later in the city of Lerdo in Durango State.
On the day of her arrest on 2 August, Yesenia Ivonne was transferred to Playa Lina prison in Veracruz as the judicial authorities confirmed a four-month investigation process.
Judge Alma Aleida Sosa Jimenez denied the suspect’s request for house arrest due to pregnancy because of the seriousness of the charges.
During her time in the pre-trial detention centre, Yesenia Ivonne will be granted full medical care until she gives birth.
The investigation continues.
